Of all the WakeUps that have come to life in the past couple years, “WakeUp Humboldt” stands out as a shining example of a truly collaborative intergenerational WakeUp experience.

Organized in partnership by students at the Campus Center for Appropriate Technology (CCAT) at Humboldt State and Arcata community members, the event brought together nearly two hundred people with a rich age mix from 13 to 80. We had a strong intergenerational facilitation team, with Marc Dubois, an old-time activist who was a founder of Earth Day, Kalia Rose, a young mom and active member of the local community, and myself (Valerie), the WakeUp coordinator at Generation Waking Up.

Each person brought their unique perspective, gifts, and commitments, and over 10 different clubs and community groups tabled and and attended. Somehow, the intense beauty of Humboldt – the majestic redwood trees, epic beaches and lush greenery – seemed to be absorbed and reflected back in the participants’ luminosity, commitment, and deep understanding of interconnectedness.

It was a pleasure to be part of such a collaborative intergenerational exploration and integration of different facets of the Humboldt community. This experience is bound to serve as a model for success of community-campus collaborative WakeUp events!
